Effective. Reliable. Motivated. These are the three words that people have used to describe Yasmeen Mayes. A junior at Drexel University, Yasmeen is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Communications with a concentration in public relations. In high school Yasmeen was always passionate about people, the news, current events and pop culture and dreamed to one day be the Director of Communications at the White House or a publicist for a celebrity in the entertainment industry.
To kick-start her professional public relations journey, Yasmeen completed a 6-month co-op at Drexel’s LeBow College of Business in the Office of Engagement. There she supported various programs, events, special projects and constituent relations for Drexel’s business school. She learned the ins and outs of the best practices covering the full spectrum of customer service, event marketing and events implementation. She was an effective and reliable team member with the capacity to learn and apply creative ideas to different events at LeBow.
She has worked with Drexel’s Lindy Center for Civic Engagement as a Civic Engagement Ambassador at Alain Locke Elementary School. There she tutored 7th and 8th grade students in math and literacy. She is currently working with the Lindy Center as an advisor at the Young Dragons Summer Camp where she helps excited elementary and high school students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Design, and Mathematics.
Yasmeen is motivated and fueled by her family to be the best young professional she can be. Upon graduation in June 2018, Yasmeen will be the first woman in her family to obtain a bachelor’s degree. She grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey which is just a short 25-minute train ride from Manhattan — a radiant city that inspires her because of its vibrant and zestful energy. Yasmeen’s hometown of Elizabeth is also full of diversity. She is so grateful to have grew up in a city surrounded by different cultures which has equipped her to be able to collaborate effortlessly with diverse groups.
In her personal time Yasmeen enjoys photography, going to concerts, spending time with her family and exploring the city of Philadelphia with her friends. Yasmeen hopes to translate the skills she has been acquiring in her field into the real-world to add value to a future organization in the exciting, fast-paced profession of public relations.
